Internal Investigations, the unit that holds all members of the Sheriff’s Office responsible for their actions, has been decimated over the last year. Experienced detective sergeants have either left or transferred. Now there are only two detectives in the unit, with a combined experience handling misconduct investigations of about 7 months. That is unacceptable. When I am Sheriff, I will staff this unit to the level needed to assure quality, thorough, and timely investigations. The community expects no less.
Many citizen complaints have been transferred to patrol sergeants for investigation, much like the Seattle Police did, and that was a failure, according to the Dept. of Justice. Patrol sergeants have neither the time nor experience to conduct these often demanding and complex investigations. Expecting untrained individuals to handle citizen complaints is unacceptable and does an injustice to the citizen complaint process.
